Work Experience

Sr. Engineer / Systems Administrator

10/2007 - Present  LanCo Systems Inc, Beaverton, Oregon

I am the network administrator for LanCo Systems and Integrated Powers Systems.  I administer the Microsoft Windows 2003 network system.  Duties include: MS Exchange Administration; file and directory permissions; Active Directory and Group Policy permissions. 

I act as the Sr. Network engineer, Systems/ Network engineer and Systems administrator for outside clients. I provide outside consulting services which encompass Microsoft desktop and server operating systems, messaging systems, wireless, VoIP, switching, routing and VPN solutions

My duties include: performing network assessments; analyzing network health; stability; security, and licensing. I design network installations for SMB and Educational clients. I perform troubleshooting of existing client networks addressing their “Break / Fix” needs.  I provide clients with both remote and onsite support in a partnered manner.  To build up the internal staff of our clients I provide mentoring services augmenting their IT staff ensuring long term success. 

Sr. Integration Engineer (VoIP)

8/2005 – 10/2007  Pacific Star Communications, Portland, Oregon

I designed, implemented and integrated PacStar's PS5500 line of tactically deployable windows based VoIP network solutions.  Design included but was not limited to COTs product selection, evaluation and integration into new and existing product lines. And I was instrumental in the software design process acting as co-architect of the company IQ-Core management software, which included both interface design and backend functionality.  I recommended and specified new features and technologies for implementation in the PacStar product lines.  I acted as chief integrator of new technologies. 

I specified; defined; implemented; and developed operating system installation and configuration automation technologies for the deployment of Microsoft Windows based servers by production staff.  I developed many of the scripts used by PacStar IQ-Core software.  I played a primary role in researching new and novel ways to perform complicated functions on disparate platforms as a single interfacing operation transparent to users.   I developed much of the pseudo code that resulted in the finished products and their resultant patents.

PacStar filed several U.S. Patent applications of which I am listed as a primary inventor or developer, four are pending.  Pending patents include but are not limited to Software interface and automation, Design Theory, Hardware design of tactically deployable case structures supporting COTs equipment.  Consequent to my deep understanding of our products I worked closely with the development staff both in-house and overseas.

I designed and implemented customer specific and certification deployments of PacStar 5500 products as well as other solutions.  Solutions included but were not limited to VoIP, Windows Based Networks, Secure Wireless networks, Global networks utilizing Satellite connectivity.  I worked closely with clients in both pre-sales and post sales technical capacities.  I provided tier 1, 2 and tier 3 24x7 support of clients in the field, in multiple states and many countries for PacStar’s developed and vended products.  I worked closely with many military commands including 1st Army, 21st TSC, 24th ID and the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC).  I have directly supported VoIP communications for US Army MRX and Joint NATO exercises both on and off site. I was the primary technical liaison for JITC certification of PacStar products.

IT Manager / Systems Engineer

8/2003 - 8/2005  Pacific Star Communications Inc., Portland, Oregon

I maintained and managed the network infrastructure and desktops for one of the then fastest growing companies in Oregon.  I supported 35 internal users locally and seven remote offices in Korea, Okinawa, Germany, Florida, Texas, California and Southern Oregon.

I maintained twelve Windows Based Servers, a mix of 2000 and 2003.  I migrated all the systems from Windows NT after being hired to secure the system from complete compromise.   I maintained Active Directory, Goldmine, Exchange, Mass 200 and DMZ applications including Relay mail servers for anti-spam and anti-virus scanning of inbound mail.   I performed all upgrades and troubleshooting for the entire network, including the switches and routers and related software systems.  I managed the desktop support personnel, helping them to achieve reasonable customer service goals.    I provided mentoring to peers and junior engineers throughout all departments at PacStar.

I worked closely with the Director of IT to develop yearly and quarterly budgets.  I performed analysis of growth, and trends to determine future needs.  I performed ROI analysis on proposed projects and initiatives.  I worked closely with vendors and contractors overseeing their work, performance, and deliverables. I worked closely with the facilities/ operations staff to determine power, wiring and space requirements for the expansion of PacStar.  I designed and implemented the new datacenter at PacStar’s new location.  I oversaw the move of all IT related equipment including servers, switches, WAP’s, desktops, telephones, telephone switches, and related services to PacStar’s new location.  

Concurrent with my IT Management duties, I performed tier 2/3 support for PacStar’s line of OEM DSL modems, and VAR DSLAM solutions.  I managed the tier 1 personnel for PacStar’s line of OEM DSL products.  I provided training to the tier 1 support personnel for both, support techniques, troubleshooting, programming and other technical issues.  I provided installation and technical support for VOIP products provided by PacStar.   I performed both onsite and remote configuration troubleshooting and design.

I participated in the development of PacStar’s SWAN (Secure Wireless Area Network) which included FIPS 140 encrypted wireless VOIP and network access.  Other items I was involved integrating into the SWAN included FSO (Free Space Optics) and Satellite modem integration into the modular structure.

I was regularly involved in the engineering of WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Networks) and their installation.  I was regularly involved in the engineering of solutions for many Local, State and Federal Clients of Pacific Star.  Solutions ranged from complete ground up to simple network or infrastructure upgrades.  I provided post-installation support for all solutions Pacific Star provided.

Network Security Analyst

6/2002 - 6/2003 AgreeYa, Folsom CA, Project: County of Fresno ITSD

             I was part of a team that performed user, resource, and security administration for the County of Fresno. The major performance of my work took place within the County of Fresno’s Windows NT/2000 Master-Resource Domain model, consisting of twenty-four resource domains and two master domains.  My primary team duties included administration and tier two / three support of over seven thousand Windows NT/2000 users and Nine thousand Exchange 5.5 mail objects.  I performed user, permission and SID migration from Windows NT 4.0 to the integrated Windows 2000 domain.  I was also part of a separate three-member team that administered users, file, and application security on the County of Fresno AIX and Open VMS systems. 

In order to bolster team productivity in everyday tasks, I developed several systems administration scripts for administering Active Directory objects, and Windows NT 4.0.  These administration scripts saved many man-hours resulting in higher productivity.  They were at the time of my departure, part of the standard operating procedures for system maintenance within the County of Fresno ITSD department.

Concurrent with my regular duties, I was involved in a complete systems analysis and audit of all systems for HIPAA compliance.  As part of my auditing duties, I performed gap analysis of the configuration state of the Windows NT/2000 network against the NSA Windows NT/2000 security guidelines.

Internet Infrastructure Engineer

6/2000 - 4/2002  MarketTools, Inc., Mill Valley, CA

I performed general systems administrator duties, user administration.  Software installation, upgrades and evaluation. I completed server builds for production and QA deployments. Maintained high availability networks at three data centers totaling over 200 hundred MS Windows 2000 and NT 4.0 network server hosts.

I maintained the administrative the WAN to the data centers. I maintained perimeter Firewalls, IDS, internal Firewalls, and host based IDS. I performed performance monitoring, system up time, service availability, host integrity, traffic analysis, bandwidth usage, and trending across the network.   I led the initiative to migrate from Windows NT 4.0 SAM to Windows 2000 Active Directory.

I managed all DNS services, web servers and database servers and high availability server clusters supporting MarketTools ASP infrastructure.  I led the team that deployed the custom web based applications to the infrastructure.  I worked closely with developers and vendors to maintain system integrity and quality assurance. I provided infrastructure analysis for proposed application deployments, as well as impact analysis for existing infrastructure.

 

Systems and Design Administrator

While at Hexagon performed general systems administrator duties, user administration, software installation and upgrades of software. My primary duties included the administration of MS Server Applications, Exchange Server 5.X, SQL Server 6.X -7.0 and MS DNS.

My other duties included: design of customer networks and installation of customer networks, assignment of IP addresses, both static and DHCP.    I performed web server administration and maintenance.  Maintenance of the corporate intranet which included: secured user management, directory permission tools, ODBC tools, and scripted database creation.

I performed general systems administrator duties and user administration. I was part of a team that maintained web servers; performed system upgrades and patches both for BSDI UNIX and Windows NT 3.x Operating systems.  I performed back-ups and restores of data from both the UNIX and NT systems and performing general maintenance of customer directories and files.  I was responsible for performing tier 2 and 3 help desk duties that required the assistance of a systems administrator.
